Texana Center and Houston Humane Society Partner to Support Individuals in Crisis and their Pets

(ROSENBERG, TX.) – Texana Center has officially announced a new partnership with the Houston Humane Society by providing temporary emergency boarding for pets that belong to individuals seeking mental health services through Texana’s Crisis Center. The goal of this program is to reduce barriers to care for clients who otherwise would refuse or delay admission due to concerns about their pets’ wellbeing while they are away from home.

Boarding with this program is completely free of charge and can be up to 90 days, with the condition that the client remain in contact and updates the Houston Humane Society on the care needed. While being boarded, the Houston Humane Society will provide meals and care, including with the owner’s permission: spay or neuter and up to date vaccinations.

“The Houston Humane Society and members of the SETLINK Coalition are excited about the addition of Texana Center. This new partnership allows us to grow and continue to build our network so that we can bring awareness of the LINK and help those affected by both animal and human violence,” Greg Evans, Community Impact Director said.

This initiative was created to support victims of domestic violence by providing a safe space for clients’ pets while they sought safety and recovery. It has since expanded to assist anyone experiencing a mental health crisis or other emergencies. Through this partnership, mental health needs are recognized as an important factor in a pet owner’s well-being, helping remove one of the barriers that can prevent an individual from seeking the professional help they need.

“Pets are a huge support for individuals, and having a safe place to take care of them can mean the difference between life and death,” Eilean Mackenzie, Crisis Center Manager, said. When someone is in crisis and needs to leave home, to reach out and either stay or go, it is often about the safety of their family members, including their fur babies.”

Through this partnership, the Houston Humane Society will provide free temporary boarding for up to 90 days, along with hot meals and daily care. With the owner’s consent, pets may also receive spay and neuter services and updated vaccinations during their stay. Clients must maintain contact with the Humane Society during the boarding period. Giving people peace of mind that their pets are safe and cared for while they focus on the road to recovery.

All services offered through this program are provided at no cost to clients receiving services at the Crisis Center. For more information about this service, call the Crisis Hotline at 1-800-633-5686.
